Full Stack FastAPI Template
Free FastAPI and React starter with Postgres, JWT auth and Docker deployment

- Best for
- A Python-first developer or small team building an internal tool or data-heavy web app who wants FastAPI, Postgres, auth, tests and CI already connected, for free.
- Skip if
- Skip it if you need Stripe billing, subscriptions, social login or multi-tenant teams out of the box, because none of those is in the feature list and you'd be building the SaaS layer yourself.
An MIT-licensed full-stack template hosted under the fastapi GitHub organization. It pairs a FastAPI backend (SQLModel, Pydantic, PostgreSQL, Alembic migrations) with a React, TypeScript and Vite frontend built on Tailwind and shadcn/ui. Since release 0.11.0 (11 Aug 2026), the compiled React app ships inside the backend image and FastAPI serves it alongside the API, so there's no separate frontend host to run. It comes with JWT login, email-based password recovery, an admin user screen, an example Items CRUD dashboard, Pytest and Playwright tests, and GitHub Actions workflows. Deployment uses Docker Compose with Traefik for HTTPS, and there are docs for FastAPI Cloud. It's for Python developers who want an app skeleton that's already wired together, not a SaaS business kit with payments.
Pros
- It's actively maintained. As of this review (29 Oct 2026), the last commit on master landed on 26 Oct 2026 (an automated dependency bump plus release-notes update; the last maintainer-authored change was on 15 Oct 2026), and the latest tagged release (0.12.0) shipped on 12 Aug 2026.
- Testing comes set up on both sides: Pytest for the backend, Playwright for end-to-end tests, and GitHub Actions workflows that also check the Docker Compose stack and run the zizmor workflow scanner.
- The frontend API client is generated from the backend's OpenAPI schema, so typed calls stay in step with the Python models instead of drifting.
- It's free under the MIT license and has about 46k GitHub stars, so it's one of the most-used starting points in the FastAPI ecosystem.
Cons
- It's an app skeleton, not a SaaS kit. The feature list has no payments, subscriptions, OAuth or social login, organizations or teams, and the dashboard's Items CRUD is a placeholder you'll delete.
- The backend requires Python 3.14 or newer, which can rule it out for teams locked to an older interpreter or older base images.
- The layout changed in release 0.11.0 (11 Aug 2026): the compiled React app now ships inside the backend image and FastAPI serves it, and earlier versions of the template were laid out differently. Blog posts and tutorials written before that release may describe a project structure that no longer matches.
- The deployment docs point to FastAPI Cloud, a separate hosted service from the same ecosystem, and its pricing isn't covered here. The free self-hosting path assumes you're comfortable running Docker Compose and Traefik yourself.
